BCACS is a a not-for-profit organization registered under the BC Societies Act. BCACS promotes professional standards and education in clinical laboratory medicine and serves as the representation for Clinical Scientists in the province.

Clinical Scientists are highly qualified clinical specialists that work in diagnostic and laboratory medicine. They are PhD-trained medical laboratory specialists that have undergone clinical postdoctoral fellowship training and board certification by North American regulatory bodies.

WHAT

WE DO

If you have ever have ever had a blood test (or other type of lab test) in British Columbia, chances are, you engaged the services of a Clinical Scientist!

PATIENT CARE

​

Clinical Scientists deliver diagnostic testing and consultation services to other health practitioners, and adhere to a strict quality and safety standards. For example, Clinical Scientists report the results of critical and complex diagnostic investigations directly to physicians on a daily basis and directly influence the quality of patient care.

INDEPENDENT PRACTITIONERS

 

Clinical Scientists demonstrate competency in the various components of laboratory medicine, including clinical service, research, education and training, as well as service to their profession. As their training places them at the top of their discipline, Clinical Scientists may carry out their clinical duties as independent practitioners.

SCOPE OF PRACTICE

​

  • Creating and directing an accredited clinical/diagnostic laboratory service;

  • Generating, disseminating and interpreting data from diagnostic investigations;

  • Acting as an expert consultant to support clinical and public health programs;

  • Developing and supporting training programs for clinical/medical professional and technical personnel;

  • Establishing and supporting standardization, innovation and modernization of provincial diagnostic services;

  • Oversight of regulated health professions and technical personnel, including medical residents and medical laboratory technologists.
